Here we have it, the much anticipated sequel to the original film, which came out back in 2012 (hard to believe it has been that long). Is it worth all the hype? Yes and no. Is it better or as good as the original? This question probably really depends on who you ask, but I say no.
Problems aside, from the first frame you know the movie is going to be action-packed. The team starts off fighting towards a large Hydra base in hopes of finding Loki’s scepter from the first film. They find the scepter, which Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) tries to create artificial intelligence (AI) from. His project goes haywire and Ultron is the result who ultimately wants to annihilate the human race. The Avengers spend the majority of the movie tracking down Ultron getting into one large battle after the next, which begins to wear on you after awhile (or at least for me it did).
You can probably guess my biggest problem with the movie is too much action. The director, Joss Whedon, normally not only does well in these types of films/shows, but also has a pretty good track record of making them with a strong story and strong characters (the original film, Angel, Serenity, Firefly, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer). I feel like he must have just gotten too caught up in the scale and big budget for this movie, but luckily small touches do still shine through. The movie has its moments of comic relief, interesting character interactions when the Avengers have time away from the many battles, and just enough story for me to still recommend it.
It is full of action, features an ensemble of top-notch stars, and has a huge production budget so you’ll have a good time. I’ll just warn you that you might miss the much more character and story driven vibe of the first film.
