Some people just like to take things way too far or blow them out of proportion and movies are no exception. After Batman vs. Superman receiving very poor reviews earlier this year, now Suicide Squad looks like it is going to suffer the same fate. A significant number of DC fans are furious insisting they are great films. On Change.org, close to 2,000 DC fans have signed a petition to get Rotten Tomatoes taken down because the critics are blasting the latest DC films. The die-hard fans claim they are excellent movies and that Rotten Tomatoes is painting them in a bad light and only praises Marvel movies.

It may be possible that certain critics are given kickbacks or incentives to rate a movie one way or another, but to say this is the case with the 200 plus reviews that are posted on Rotten Tomatoes for each newly released movie is not logical. For example, to name a recent film with lots of reviews, Star Trek Beyond, has 212 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Also, claiming they hate all DC films is simply not true. The Christopher Nolan Batman films are considered some of the best comic book movies of all time.  The Dark Knight is considered by some as the best comic book movie of all time. The original Superman films, Batman, Batman Returns, and Superman Returns are other examples of DC movies ranging from well-received to highly praised.

I’ll admit that the Rotten Tomatoes score on most movies does influence how much I want to see it along with a good number of people these days, but I don’t think that is necessarily a bad thing. If a movie is poorly received, why should it deserve to make as much money as one that is critically praised? A similar mentality is often applied to many other things in life.

For those who are stoked for Suicide Squad, I can appreciate anyone who is excited about movies, but I had a bad feeling about this one from the get-go. I will be sitting this out until television or Redbox.

Suicide Squad currently has a 35% rating with 66 critics weighing in on the film.

My grandfather was a huge John Wayne fan so I watched a lot of westerns growing up. Some of my favorite John Wayne movies include: The Searchers, Rio Bravo, El Dorado, and Tall in the Saddle. Clint Eastwood also starred in some great ones with The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly being at the top of my list and a must see. Nowadays, a western coming out is few and far between so when one is being released it makes me excited, and I hope for the best. The original Magnificent Seven was released in 1960 and remains an iconic classic western. It was directed by John Sturges and starred some huge stars of that era like Steve McQueen and Charles Bronson. An oppressed village calls on seven gunfighters to help defend their homes from ruthless killers.

The new film is directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day). It has some big names attached to it including: Chris Pratt, Matt Bomer (White Collar), Denzel Washington, Vincent D’Onofrio (Law and Order and Daredevil), and Ethan Hawke. All five of these actors always do a great job, which definitely raises the hoping it will be good factor. In the movie, a town called Rose Creek is built around a gold mine. The town is controlled by a Baron and a group of thugs who are killing off a significant number of people. A young widow played by Haley Bennett hires a bounty hunter (Denzel Washington) to take care of the problem. With the money he receives, he is able to hire six other gunmen to help take care of things.

If anything, the film promises some significant star power and action. The trailer is definitely action packed. Let’s hope it turns out great when it hits theaters September 23, 2016. You can view the trailer posted on YouTube below –

Welcome to Movie Burrow’s first official blog post! I plan to update it on a regular basis from here on out.

King Kong (the movie is formally being called Kong:Skull Island) is returning to the big screen on March 10, 2017. It has been ten years since Peter Jackson’s remake of the original King Kong, which is an excellent creature feature epic based on the 1933 original. It stars Jack Black, Naomi Watts, and Adrien Brody. It is a little long at three hours and seventeen minutes, but as far as creature features go it is as good as they get. I recommend giving it a watch if you have not.

Unfortunately, the new film is not being directed by Peter Jackson, but by Jordan Vogt-Roberts with no big titles under his belt. He is rumored to be attached to a movie version of Metal Gear Solid though. Despite his minimal recognition some big names are starring in the movie including: Tom Hiddleston (best known as Loki), Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, and John C. Reilly. It is set in the 1970s following a group of soldiers traveling to Skull Island. It is said to be an origins story. The most drastic change in the new film is going to be King Kong’s appearance. He is going to be 100 feet tall versus 10 to 30 feet tall in the previous films. Whether this will look cool or cheesy is hard to say at this point. Part of the change in appearance is to setup Kong for Godzilla vs. Kong in 2020.

I remain skeptical of this new movie at this point, but as a big fan of Peter Jackson’s rendition of the original, here’s to hoping it will be good with some big names attached to it. At least it is not being released in January with the known flops.
