This is my BOOMSTICK!
With plenty of great one-liners like the one above, this movie is pretty hard not to love. If you allow yourself to give into the madness, it is considered a cult classic, which is well-justified.
For anyone who has seen Evil Dead 1 and 2, knows this movie is considerably different than its prequels. The first two were genuine horror films with some dark humor. While this one can be scary at times, it is more of a spoof on the horror genre and a hybrid of multiple genres. Ash (Bruce Campbell), who claims his throne as the king of B movie cool in this film, is sucked into a time portal at the end of the second film and ends up in medieval times. He gets kidnapped because he is mistaken as an enemy of the nearby kingdom and is forced to find the Book of the Dead. He must find it to be returned to his own time and help the kingdom fight off the undead legions that have arisen. The movie is only about 90 minutes long, but in that time it manages to be very creative, weird, funny, and crazy. The director, Sam Raimi, who also co-wrote the script, has a style that is both unique and intriguing. With all that said, you must have a special appreciation for the creativity at work here.
Some common complaints I’ve heard are it’s cheesy, doesn’t make sense, and is just plain weird. Do I disagree with these things? Not necessarily, but there is just too much to like to write it off for any small issues it may have.
If you haven’t seen it and are willing to succumb to the madness, definitely check it out.
